"You've Won": Scene Analysis

Schitt's Creek

If we think about it, we are known more for our flaws than for the good parts. And not that it’s wrong, in fact, it is who we are. But, it’s sad that people who wouldn’t even care to stay, constantly remind us of the things we are not good enough at.

David and Stevie are two flawed characters and like the other amazing ones, Schitt’s Creek is a journey of their growth and stories. This specific scene is one of the happy ones, because we find them celebrating their victories, unknowingly.

They’re sitting on the car, staring at the house that Patrick wanted. Places can be changed, and it doesn’t take long. But what stays, is the idea of a future with someone, that you’re so certain about. Like the first thing that reflected to Patrick was the need to have a place for David and himself, to spend the rest of their lives in. So it’s not the place but the importance that it holds.

There’s also friendship and the fact that both Stevie and David have come a long way, picking each other up. They’ve shown time and again that they are there for each other. But there’s acknowledgment and so much love in the scene. Also that, Stevie finally asks David to stay, because she definitely cares for him more. Not like, any of them would not have it together without the other one. But the mere fact that we choose to show when we want someone in our lives, you know, in more ways than one.

Finally and most importantly, there’s David’s need to let the ‘friends’ know, that he’s won. That he has it all, all of what he never thought he could get. Because he was told that he couldn’t. And why wouldn’t he want that? Afterall, it is necessary for them to know that he’s not a joke. But again, he didn’t need them to find and work through getting everything that made him win.

We keep looking for things that’d make us happy, which is nothing but normal. And when we do find them, we know we’ve won. To tell it to the world or not, is something that we have to choose.
